BOOK OVERVIEW

new_bookIn 2009, Business Week Magazine released a fascinating article on the top 50 companies to launch a career. Within this powerful article, not only did Business Week Magazine list the top 50 companies to launch a career, but they listed the number one quality that each of these employers searched for most in future employees. Surprisingly, the number one quality listed by 50% of the companies featured in Business Week Magazine was leadership! Although this may be shocking for some to believe, what is even more intriguing about this trend is that in the fall semester of 2012, the National Association of College Employers released a study where approximately 75% of employers stated that they look for leadership experience in a future employee’s resume. Ultimately, what many of us can learn from trend is, if you are going to obtain career and personal success in the 21st Century, you must possess the right leadership skills, because most companies and organizations have learned that effective leadership has that much power on the success or failure of an organization or company.

Subsequently, in response to this trend and strong belief in effective leadership over the past decade, we now have more leadership development programs than ever before all across the world. Unfortunately, with all these different leadership development programs, trainings, conferences, and retreats, there are still many people in the world that believe we have a leadership crisis. The main reason that some people believe we have a leadership crisis in the world is because they believe that leaders have become more concerned about elections, deals, titles, bonuses, bailouts, and profits than the well-being of the people they serve. These same leadership critics also believe that the power of effective leadership has been lost in some organizations, companies, communities, and nations due to greed, fear, selfishness, lack of compassion, division among others, unethical behavior, and a lack of concern for the future of the people in which they represent. And, if that was not bad enough, these same leadership critics also believe that a majority of the people who desire to become leaders are wannabes who want the benefits, prestige, accolades, respect, dignity, and power that come with leadership—without ever developing the courage, humility, wisdom, love, integrity, character, heart, purpose, resilience, values, and leadership skills necessary to become great leaders in the 21st Century.

Although I agree with various men and women who make the assertion that we have a leadership crisis in America, I still believe that there are some amazing individuals in the world that can emerge into powerful leaders of the 21st Century with the right leadership training. Therefore, I have drawn from fifteen years of leadership training and research, hundreds of keynote speeches and workshops on the topic of leadership, countless personal experiences as a leader over the past twenty years, and a multitude of discussions with successful leaders around the world to develop a new leadership book for 21st Century leaders. This book will provide emerging and seasoned leaders with forty important questions they must all ask themselves before they aspire to become one of the world’s next top leaders.
